That Dern Bruce

He may have looked nearly-unrecognizable as our last Mystery Guest, but we should have known that many in this crowd would recognize Bruce Dern from Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964). That film, as young Charlotte's unfortunate married suitor, marked Dern's first substantial film role following a slew of television credits, and cast him alongside some of SSUWAT's all-time icons:

Dern, of course, went on to become most famous for his rogue's gallery of psychopaths, junkies, and all-around wackos; his attempts at breaking out of the weirdo stereotype were generally less-than-successful, as evidenced by Won-Ton-Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1976). For being the first to correctly name Mr. Dern, the elusive herm730 wins a week's services from Velma, the maid.

Thanks for playing, darlings!

  1. I had the great good fortune to see Varla Jean Merman (& Co.) in Shut Up Sweet Charlotte in Key West last month. It put the original film in a whole new light for me. Catch it if possible.
